The composer loved the genre of the chamber music. At wide intervals he wrote
three string quartets (1919, 1939, 1967) of which the second in E minor in many
respects crowned his work. A great number of quartet ensembles already had
interpreted this work, that also was published as the first composition of Suder
in the Amadeus-Verlag (Bernhard Päuler) in Wintherthur. The piano quartet (1936)
and the wind quintet of 1976 completed the series of the ensemble-work whereas
the quartet stands out due to a brilliant drive and thrilling music, the quinted
due to an extremely concise and concentrated style.
Two very melodious violin sonatas of 1919 and 1949 rank among the significant
works of chamber music as well. The "Suite nach alter Art" is holding an
exeptional position: three very early piano pieces were instrumented for string
quartet and string orchestra, then they were completet by additional pieces.
Today it probably is one of the most famous works of the composer for it is
easily comprehensible, original, effective and easy to be played even by good
lay orchestras - due to the "alte Art",however, it does not represent the core
of Suder's compositions, even though the "Lustige Fuge" at the end is a
masterpiece that is unique due to the combination of severe polyphony and
cheerful expression.
